Protecting Florida’s Coastlines Through Innovation
In this video, we take a closer look at how the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is tackling one of Florida’s most pressing coastal challenges—erosion—through the use of wave attenuators.
These innovative structures are strategically placed to reduce the force of incoming waves before they reach vulnerable shorelines. By absorbing and dispersing wave energy, wave attenuators help slow erosion, stabilize sediments, and protect critical coastal infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and surrounding communities.

This project highlights FDOT’s proactive, forward-thinking approach to coastal management—combining engineering solutions with environmental awareness to safeguard Florida’s coastlines for the long term.
Darlene Shuman and her team founded Salt Strong Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to conserving Florida’s waterways and protecting marine habitats. Through education, sustainable fishing initiatives, and public outreach, they have inspired countless individuals and organizations to join the effort to preserve Florida’s aquatic ecosystems.

See The Change
Before installation, this stretch of shoreline was vulnerable to constant wave energy, causing visible erosion and threatening nearby infrastructure. After wave attenuators were placed, the shoreline is better protected—wave energy is reduced, sediments are stabilized, and the coastal environment has a chance to recover and thrive.
