COMMUNITY
Chapter Spotlights
Recognizing chapters making a difference through conservation and community.
Salt Strong Alliance recognizes the Salt Strong Fishing Club Sarasota Chapter (#1) for their outstanding conservation initiatives led by Conservation Coordinator Rick Thompson.
Rick’s passion for conservation is shining through with his recent involvement in the Oyster Catcher Mat Workshop and the Redfish Release Program. His commitment extends to actively constructing vertical oyster gardens and enriching marine ecosystems by installing them under members’ docks.
Through Rick’s leadership, the Sarasota Chapter continues to set a high standard for hands-on conservation in their local waters.

Salt Strong Alliance recognizes the Salt Strong Fishing Club Tampa Chapter (#2) for their Clams for Clean Water Initiative — a conservation project born from the passion of its founding members.
It all began during early chapter discussions, when Captain Mike Goodwine expressed the idea of establishing a super-powered conservation workforce to tackle Salt Strong-inspired conservation projects. Combined with George Layton’s vision of a united force for conservation comprised of dedicated Salt Strong Insiders, the foundation was set.
Inspired by Captain Blair Wiggins’s Indian River Lagoon Clam Restoration Project and its proven success, George Layton (Conservation Coordinator) and Darlene Shuman (Chapter President) created the Clams for Clean Water Tampa Bay Initiative — a powerful, community-driven effort to restore one of Florida’s most treasured fisheries.
Salt Strong Alliance — 501(c)3
Salt Strong Alliance recognizes the Salt Strong Fishing Club Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter (#15) for their support of Andrew Cook, Eagle Scout and junior at UMS High School in Mobile, Alabama.
Conservation Coordinator Marc Thomas connected with Andrew through a local guide who spoke at one of their chapter meetings. For his Eagle Scout project, Andrew chose to install a split-rail fence around the perimeter of the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary — a meaningful effort to protect one of the Gulf Coast’s most vital wildlife habitats.
Salt Strong Alliance donated $1,000 toward Andrew’s $6,000 goal. Chapter directors Josh Tipton (Tournament Coordinator) and Justin Mayfield (IT/Media Coordinator) joined Marc in volunteering their time, helping Andrew and his team install the fence over three weeks.
Andrew is an outstanding young conservationist with a deep passion for the outdoors and a commitment to keeping our coastal environments thriving for generations to come.

Salt Strong Alliance recognizes the Salt Strong Fishing Club Space Coast Chapter (#17) for their sustained conservation impact under the leadership of Conservation Coordinator Jim McKinney.
Jim has spearheaded numerous clean-up efforts across Brevard County, including monthly Trash-Bash events at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge — fostering community involvement and keeping critical habitat clean and healthy. He also works closely with refuge staff to maintain adopted areas on an ongoing basis.
Beyond clean-ups, Jim actively promotes broader conservation opportunities to chapter members, including the Build-a-Reef Program at the Brevard County Zoo, encouraging participation in initiatives that extend the chapter’s impact across the entire Space Coast ecosystem.
